Why don't you buy a battery for the Mac and stick with OS X?

Well considering the treatment it might get at Uni I'd be inclined to keep the existing hardware get a battery and install Windows. Then hint at getting him a nice new one for doing his Honours Thesis on  Tongue

Nor is that Asus either. What about getting him a Surface Pro that way he'll get two gadgets for the price of one?

Re: Mackbok running Win7/8 or Asus UX 305

I do worry about getting cheap batteries, I was kind of hoping somebody on here may have had an experience with a third party laptop batteries, I know the ones I've bought have been not the best, I got 1 for my satnav and another for a pair of headphones, can't say that I was over impressed with either. I guess this battery has to be replaced anyway, but I will look at a Surface Pro as well then, cheers.

Re: Mackbok running Win7/8 or Asus UX 305

if your looking at the surface pro don't forget about getting him a linx 10" tab, its less than half the price comes with the keyboard and also runs the full 8.1 pro version of windows and the one I got my colledge starter had a full years sub to office 365 personal as well, even with the 64gig sd card and the 128gig usb stick it still cost less than half the price of a surface pro3 so unless he's going ot be doing some high end stuff on the device theres not much point in spending extra on the surfacepro3

Re: Mackbok running Win7/8 or Asus UX 305

I bought a few batteries for a hp laptop a few years back, out of 3 I got 1 that worked for more than a couple of days and they were all from HP direct......there's often no difference between the cheap version and the so called genuine ones ended up getting 3 working ones from batteryking.co.uk but they took ages to arrive /

Re: Mackbok running Win7/8 or Asus UX 305

If you really want to be "cheapskate" about a battery.... you can open the plastic casing to see what kind and type of batteries are loaded in, and then probably source replacements rechargables on ebay...
You may need to do a bit of soldering....

Re: Mackbok running Win7/8 or Asus UX 305

Apple charge £150 if I take it in, I dare say it might be worth a punt getting one of those. We had a look at the 10" and decided it's a bit to small, 13" seems a better size for tired eyes etc.
I did look over the option of soldering some cells together about 12 months ago but just didn't warm to the idea, I also like the idea that the part I install will be perfectly safe for another person to use, yes I know it's an aluminium case etc.
