Macbook pro not booting

It just sits on the boot screen with apple logo and progress bar just under half way.
Done a reformat, still the same.
Using cmd+shift+v
boot-args = -v
** /dev/rdisk0s2 (NO WRITE)
** Root file system
    Executing fsck_hfs (Version hfs-285
Blah blah.....
I/O error rdisk0s2
Then it hangs at the boot screen again with no progress at all.

Re: Macbook pro not booting

have you tried pressing and holding Command+R at startup, it should boot to the recovery partition, where you can run Disk Utility.
see what that says.

Re: Macbook pro not booting

cmd+R doesn't seem to do anything, pressing the option key lets me choose recovery so I can get to it that way round, I guess I'm looking at the repair option ?

Re: Macbook pro not booting

One possible reason is that the PRAM battery is dead.  Here's some notes from when I fixed one for somebody ...

Page with instructions that resolved issue so far:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    power off
    get ready with cmd-alt-P-R keys
    power on
immediately press cmd-alt-P-R keys all togehter
    release them when computer reboots
May need a PRAM batter replacement if that problem persists.
    for example ebay £4.95

Re: Macbook pro not booting

I've pressed erase on the Main HD and am waiting.................  does the OS X Base System need to be erased as well ? Or does that get overwritten by the re-install ?

Re: Macbook pro not booting

How do you clean a HDD?
I put mine in the dishwasher and it wouldn't work any more.  Cry

Re: Macbook pro not booting

Plenty of fairy liquid and elbow grease helps!
WARNING do not put in dishwasher.

Re: Macbook pro not booting

My friend across the pond had issues like that with his MBP (don't ask what model cos I haven't a clue, they're all the same to me!!), turned out to be the SATA cable between the motherboard and the hard drive, once he replaced it, the MBP worked and is still working fine... Smiley
