This may be a daft question But does MS Backup compress the files it backs up?

Not in XP.    Sad
Don't know about Vista or Windows 7

Re: MS Backup

I have all my docs, photos etc on a partition to make it easier to backup. The backup file is smaller than the size of all the files on the drive, hence my question.

Re: MS Backup

Most likely to be the minimum file size used for the disk(s).  Small disks may use a 1KByte minimum whereas larger e.g. 160GByte may use a 16K or even a 32K minimum block size.
So.  On one disk a 100 byte Notepad *.txt file shows up as 1K, but copy the file to a larger drive and it will show as 16K - no change in the data, just more empty space!
