Liteon DVD drive

My DVD drive, which had given me good service for sevaral years, recently packed up.
The only one I was able to get locally (there are no computer shops near here, so I had to get it from Argos!) is a Liteon.
The thing has got a mind of its own!
It ignores the burning speed which I set in any of the four programs I have tried, and burns at a speed of at least 16x for CDs and 8x for DVDs. (It's very noisy as well). As a lot of my burning is of LInux ISOs, I like to burn at about 4x. I am getting an occasonal coaster, as the speed is too fast.
Can I do anything to make the thing do as its told?
I am on the verge of throwing it away, as I don't trust it!
If it can't be tamed, can you recommend one which will obey my settings, please?
Many thanks
Keith

Re: Liteon DVD drive

What software do you use?
k3b (Linux!) goes through a "determining optimum speed calibration" on each disk.

Re: Liteon DVD drive

Have you checked for firmware updates?

Re: Liteon DVD drive

Thank you both for your replies.
axisofevil. If I am running KDE, I use K3b. If I am running Gnome, I use Brasero (but have also tried Gnomebaker). If I am running XP, I use either Nero or InfraRec.
Their speed settings are all over-ridden by the drive.

timlake. I have checked and the drive has the latest firmware.

Re: Liteon DVD drive

Sorry you have no luck.
On a previous machine, a badged Lite-on was supplied - it ran perfectly (with Nero).
It was quite noisy too.
My CD-RW disks read "4X - 12X" compatible - I'm not sure what this means  Smiley
K3b burns them at about 11X.
My DVD+RW disks read "1X - 4X" - but they burn fast enough for me  Smiley

Probably can't do anything to force it to obey but you can always send it to me instead of the landfill Wink
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
