Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

OK, so I've tried it with Mint...still getting those IRQ errors on load. Then it gets to the splash screen and goes no further (I let it run for 10 mins. +, no dice).

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

I thought you were getting DRMI errors - which are a totally different can of worms.

Can you boot from any external disk or USB?

Have a look at https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000474.htm if it's still a DRMI problem.

Can you take some photos of the screens, as they appear... so that we can get an idea of what is happening, and what you are seeing.

might help.. !

I get the DMI hang when I try to boot from a USB stick. With DVD-R it doesn't happen.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

OK, some photos (apologies for quality):

1. What I set the BIOS to:

mint_inst_01.jpg

2. The loading screen showing that it's trying to boot from the DVD drive:

mint_inst_02.jpg

3. The error messages (this is for Mint, but the same thing is true of Ubuntu & Kubuntu):

mint_inst_03.jpg

4. The 'splash screen'. At this point, the optical drive will thrash for a bit and then stop. This is as far as it goes:

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

Just tried booting a CD-ROM for Mint 19.2 (Mate) from a Computer Magazine on a moderately old laptop.

It came up with a GRUB boot selection menu before proceeding with the command entry display screen.

Several IRQ errors for vector then flashed past as did the Spectre message and after about 5 minutes it finished booting.

BTW That Spectre message is quite normal.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

But did you already have Mint (or some other version of Linux) on it?

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

Yes (Ubuntu) - but booting from CD-ROM does not access or even check for the existence of a disk.

The GRUB menu did not refer to any HD operating systems and I would expect  most Linux boots from CD to show some kind of menu, even if it only allows a choice of boot or validation of the CD.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

@thejudge  & @VileReynard   Seems a bit strange to me, that you are showing "Hard Disc"  ( highlighted in red ) . on your first pic....

Does that remain, when you have a USB stick inserted ?

My boot order is CDROM       USB         . Internal HDD        Floppy    ( although there is no facility for floppy on this laptop )

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

The red bit in the BIOS picture is just the position of the cursor - the boot order is indeed CDROM, USB, HD, Floppy.

I find it very strange that nothing is bootable - how certain are you that the PC is 64 bit?

Might be worth trying a 32 bit distro - not Mint as this is either not currently available as 32 bit, or won't be in the next year or two.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

@thejudge I think that @VileReynard has a point about the bit size of the machine, the BIOS is showing a copyright of 2007 so I'd be inclined to think that it is indeed a 32 bit machine.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

See https://fullcirclemagazine.org/2019/07/03/linux-mint-20-and-future-releases-will-drop-support-for-32...

I would guess that Mint will not upgrade 32 bit versions beyond June 2021 (approx). I would expect security fixes to be available out to 2024 though.

Re: Linux Dual Boot DVD-R/CD-R Problem

True - but I would suggest trying a 32 bit Linux distro.

Hope he's using rewritable CD's/DVD's for all these boot disks. 😃
