Linux Boot Disc

I have an old copy of Linux Mint (version 9) on a boot DVD that I occasionally use when a (Windows) computer will not start and I want to look at the hard drive and possibly copy files to a USB drive.  I'm wondering if I should update that to cope with newer hardware.  Is Mint still the best choice for this specific application?

I have Mint 14 on a bootable usb stick, for similar operations... works well.... especially if you can get the wireless setting on the usb stick as well,... then if there are problems with the wifi, then it should still connect on the usb stick.

I normally use UBCD rather than a specific live CD - provides just about everything you need!!

Having just needed to sort out a duff hard drive on a Sony laptop I found this did the trick http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windo... and seemed to do everything I needed

I've also successfully used an Ubuntu Live CD in similar situations.

Unless the hardware is newer than the distro then you don't really need to update the disk.
As long as you can get on-line you can usually get a driver, however Mint 9 is a bit out of date, you would be better updating the disk to Mint 17.2.
