Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

This has been getting more frequent,
Acer 5610 laptop 1gb ram, about 2 years old, no problems with fluff buildup on the fan (i've looked) or processor (I've looked).
Windows XP Home SP3
Sometimes it comes up from hibernation (after maybe 8 or 12 hours) with the fan running full on, and it doesn;t slow or stop however long i leave it. Closing running progs makes no odds to this
if i then shut down fully, and restart, (NOT just a warm reboot nb), it comes up as normal, whirr whirr a bit while it's doing the hard stuff, then settles down to "normal" operation, coming on as and when it needs to under load.
It's doing it now, in fact, so I'll post this, shut down completely and restart.
Ideas then ?
paul

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

What's the point in expecting a laptop to run continuously?
Switch it off each day or when you aren't using it.

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

where in my post does it say "I am expecting my laptoip to run continuously" ?
I'm inviting help on why this might happen , rather than a debate on the merits of how I choose to manage my computer

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

Hibernation is, of course, saving any running applications and open files in such a way that they can be started up from where you left off, then the PC shuts down. It should not be running at all.
A bit of Googling suggests this is a known problem with some Acer lappys. Try this for starters, although it might not help much.

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

Thanks Denzil, yep my own googling had turned up much the same sort of thing, so turned to the board for help.
It doesn't happen every time, but what I failed to put in my original post was that it does seem to occur more often after I've booted a linux with dodgy acpi support ... so i guess that something pretty low-level is being disturbed. But then it'll be fine for ages again, even including after a bit of penguin-fiddling.

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

It does sound like something flaky at BIOS level. Have you contacted Acer? Worth a pop, even if it is a couple of years old.

Re: Laptop fan on full after return from hibernation

Scarily I have the same laptop with XP SP3 about the same age, also dual booting into Linux.
I've never had this issue though, what flavour of Linux do you use?
The only times I have had issues was when ACPI was broken in a Ubuntu 6 beta.
Sorry can't be much help..

Ah! Acer support!
Their solution?
Reinstall the OS
I think I'll just live with it ...
