Laptop Project

I'm going to stick Linux on my laptop again but haven't decided which one just yet. A few quick questions before I get started with the tall order of getting this laptop to mirrow the XP set up it has on now.
Firstly I'm familiar with Ubuntu 10.04LTS and have it installed on my pc so I'm good for testing things before trying them on the laptop.
I don't know which direction to go in yet with the flavour so here are my concerns, I'm not sure how mint works with stable releases etc so is 11 a current stable LT version or in the middle of being worked on? Also when is the next stable version of Ubuntu due for release. If I opt for just going with 10.04 LTS in the interests of keeping it simple would be annoying to find a stable version coming out just I get everything running properly. I like a clean install on stable versions makes me feel clean again  Smiley
My biggest problem is going to be Blackberry desktop software not supported with Linux currently. The laptop comes to work with me so when I get back to the office everything gets synced up with outlook and I usually have everything I need with me in one form or the other.
The way I was going to go about it would be to find out how to use the BB as a modem so I have a connection for the lappy. The worry I have here would be getting hold of the correct connection settings. Rather than smashing my new phone on site I once put my sim card into a old samsung I have and got charged for web use. The settings I need to connect may be different from the ones o2 use so I use the blackberry service.
The other issue is syncing contacts, memos, tasks and diary entries but I think I could somehow back up stuff in out outlook and import them into evolutionHuh
Any advice appreciated!

Re: Laptop Project

As to Mint (see <a href="http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php">here</a>)
11 Katya Ubuntu Natty Supported until October 2012.
10 Julia Ubuntu Maverick Supported until April 2012.
9 Isadora Lucid Lynx Long term support release (LTS), supported until April 2013.
So Mint 9 is the current LTS version and Mint 13 (May 2012) will be the next one.

Re: Laptop Project

Thanks all, I'm thinking of just sticking with 10.04LTS for now at least that way I can test Barry out on my existing pc to see how it works before I commit to formatting my laptop.

Re: Laptop Project

Ubuntu have changed their desktop layout - fallback option is usable in 11.04 but threatened with a forced Unity for the future.
You can try this out from a live CD if you like, but I would be inclined to head Mintwards.

Re: Laptop Project

Thanks for all the suggestions. I put 10.04lts back on it tonight just finished getting the wireless sorted out. I picked lt purely because I am already familiar with it, it's been running on my other pc for a couple of years now. I don't think there would be mint 11 which would have been my next choice but I like the LTS versions, my lack of linux knowledge would probably not be suited with something that may be unstable for now especially when I'm going to try and get some things working I've never tried before.
Hopefully if it's that long until the next LTS from Ubuntu they might have ironed out a few of the things in the unity desktop that people aren't liking, I can already tell your warming to it fox  Roll eyes  Wink
I'll let y'all know how I get on with the blackberry, I will  try with barry tomorrow night. Just glad to be running again for now. Strange how you forget everything thing, that is a commendation to the software itself. I haven't had to do anything to my other system other than update and flush the browser every now and again.
