Java Applets - how do you install them ?

I'm trying to run the BT Speed Tester but I get the following error message:
You do not have Java applets
enabled in your web browser.
How do I install them so that I can run the BT Speed Tester?

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

Which browser are you using?
Internet Explorer:
Go to Tools > Internet Options. In the Advanced tab, ensure "Use JRE xxx for <applet> (requires restart)" is checked. If this option doesn't exist, then you need to download the Java Runtime Environment, which can be obtained from Sun Microsystems
Mozilla Firefox:
Go to Tools > Options. Select content and ensure "Enable Java" is checked.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the quick response.
That option is already checked in Internet Explorer - any other ideas?

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

Could you visit this site please and tell me the result (i.e. java version and if it is enabled). I'll have another think while you do that. It'll be something fairly simple, but being hungover doesn't make me very good at giving solutions! Cheesy

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

Mike,
I've tested with the following results:
1) Java Coffee Cup in system Tray
Version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_03-b05)
2)Java Console
1.6.0_03
Using JRE Version 1.6.0_03
3)Active X Control
(see attachment)
4) From Command Prompt
java Version "1.6.0_03"
Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_03-b05)
Thanks

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

Hi there,
Sorry about the late response - I fell asleep while watching TV.
If you could try this for me please, in Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options. Under the Security Tab, press the Custom Level button. Once inside, scroll down to "Scripting of Java Applets" and make sure this is enabled, then restart Internet Explorer fully and try the speed tester again.
Let me know how you get on.

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

Was it already enabled and still doesn't allow the applet to run? If so, to make sure it isn't a security issue with Internet Explorer (IIRC you are using Win98, so it'll be IE6 you're using), go to Tools > Internet Options and under the Security tab, set it to Low (does IE6 have a Very Low setting? I can't remember) and apply that. Retry the speed tester while refreshing the cached page (Ctrl + F5) and see if it works. I'm pushing for it being a setting within the security tab, but I'm unsure which one(s) it would be that would cause applets to not run. I'm not a big user of Internet Explorer I'm afraid Tongue

Re: Java Applets - how do you install them ?

I'm not using W98 on this PC it's XP.
I have 3 PCs connected to my home network via a Netgear router. They are all physically connected with Cat5e cable.
Yes, I am having some problems with my W98 PC but this Java problem is new to my XP PC.
The script was already enabled and I have just tried once again to run the speed tester but it still returns an error.
Embarrassed

It's working now -  I went to the manage Add ons in the Internet Tools section and found it was disabled.
You learn something new everyday.
Thanks for you help anyway !
