Itunes not behaving itself on Vista

In order to speed up my desktop I had disabled the "Apple Mobile Device" service using msconfig. Then I wanted to synchronise my IPod touch and turned it back on again.  Sad
Now the "Apple Mobile Device" utility is grabbing all my CPU activity and locking up Outlook and Skype. The machine locks up and nothing will run. I have done ctrl-alt-del and disabled this utility and everything works now  Tongue
But I would like to get my IPod synchronising again. Suggestions please  Undecided

Re: Itunes not behaving itself on Vista

Are you able to connect to itunes store? If not see posts on itunes forum.
http://is.gd/CTwdOP
I overcame by doing this.
1- Download itunes 10.4.0.1 (the latest version of itunes)
2- while downloading it , Uninstall the old version of itunes you have (or just uninstall iTunes if you are already running 10.4.0.1
3- Uninstall Quicktime also
4- Uninstall Apple software update
5- Uninstall Apple mobile device support
6- Uninstall Bonjour
7- Uninstall Apple application support
8- Reinstall iTunes 10.4.0.1
Hope this helps.

Re: Itunes not behaving itself on Vista

I've come across variations of this problem several times.
In my experience the core of the problem is usually (though not always obviously/directly) the Bonjour service.
This is what I do normally:
1. Remove the Bonjour service using Control Panel.
2. If this results in "complaints" from iTunes ignore/bypass them.
3. If the user has loss of functionality, reinstall it using the separate download (DL999) from Apple. This is usually OK.
My suspicion is that the way Bonjour is downloaded/integrated into iTunes has a subtle bug that replacing it with the standalone version does not.
However, in most cases it is just not needed so I advise all my customers to check for it and remove it after ANY Apple software install/update.
The download is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999 Note the subtly different naming which refers mainly to print services.  Wink
"Bonjour Print Services for Windows"  Grin
Please let me know if this works for you.
(it's also a lot easier than removing everything Apple and reinstalling)
Note: You may need to repeat the above after an iTunes update, if the symptoms return.

Re: Itunes not behaving itself on Vista

As my version is a (small and simple) subset of anniesboy's why not try it first?  Wink
Only takes a couple of minutes and no music etc. is touched.
I have seen the longer version referred to many times but so far I've been lucky and never needed to do it.

Re: Itunes not behaving itself on Vista

Peter whilst awaiting an update from HP Sauce.
The process I posted was in fact quite quick I did it on two PCs.
It was suggested that the process needed to be carried out in the order posted.
I was concerned about my music and backed up on a usb just in case.
The back up was not required as the music was stored in computer  >  music

Have you tried reinstalling it from the standalone version?
If that doesn't work them it's follow the full process I'm afraid as described by anniesboy.

My Saturday morning job was to get ITunes working again. I really am back to square one   Undecided Angry Sad Crazy
I uninstalled everything Apple in Control Panel and installed the latest ITunes from the Apple UK website and it failed to run, or rather it locked my machine up Task manager shows "Apple Mobile Device Service" and ITunes both taking 50% of the CPU activity. Last time it happened I left it all day to see if it would finish what it was doing and it never did  Sad
If SWIMBO finds out what I have done to here machine I will be banned to the laptop for life   Shocked
