Re: It's World Backup day on Moday 31st March

I have more than 14TB spread over 16 HDDs but I'm not sure that's going to be enough to back up the World Undecided Cheesy

Re: It's World Backup day on Moday 31st March

Recently bought just one 2TB disk for backups of 4 PC's.
It's not big enough if I were to use all my PC storage.
I wrote a couple of BASH scripts and set up a big LVM partition.
Each LVM partion is a bit bigger than the corresponding PC partition.
I now have 21 partitions containing every file from all my PC partitions.
All done with rsync.  Grin Grin
I don't get any problems with file locks etc - its run from a Linux live DVD.
Clever, eh? Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Re: It's World Backup day on Moday 31st March

No instructions for the soon to be abandoned XP Users
No Instructions for Linux / Android et al

Therefore they have not catered for the world O/S  Undecided why they would do that with only 3 days to go

Re: It's World Backup day on Moday 31st March

The problem is that all systems lock certain files.
Not to mention that files are continually changing.
You need a second OS to take a snapshot of your main OS and data.
A Linux live CD is excellent for this. Cheesy

Then, of course, once you have backed up....... you should back up your backup, to ensure you don`t lose anything...  Cheesy

Re: It's World Backup day on Moday 31st March

Cool On April 1st I will be streaming all of my data to punched tape.
Why punched tape?
In terms of data persistence, if looked after correctly, paper tape lasts hundreds of years longer than magnetic media. Plus tape is a format that in the future will still be readable, somehow. As for DVD's, the discs will last for hundreds of years, but optical drives will have gone extinct by the year 2040.
