Is it possible to link 2 computers

hello
I am new to this forum and this may be a daft question
I have a desk top and a laptop (using wireless)
is it possible to access the one computer with the other via the router
Thank you

Re: Is it possible to link 2 computers

Yes, and it's commonplace.
What operating systems (and versions/editions) are they running?
Note that some routers can be configured to prevent this, but normally (by default) it's not blocked.

Re: Is it possible to link 2 computers

When you say access do you mean access files and printers on the other machine or bring up the desktop of the other machine and use it as if you were sat at it (both are possible).

I would like to do both if possible But does that mean that both would have to be running at the same time.
At present I use an USB stick with all my documents on and then insert it it in either the desk top  or the lap top and just maybe this is my best option

Re: Is it possible to link 2 computers

I would say using a USB stick was a good option for documents that contain any personal data, any form of bank or utility account information etc. etc. and on either machine they should be restricted to the My Documents folder or similar - those folders that can only be accessed by the individual user or admin (although if you really get down into the nitty gritty of security you can restrict things even more).
You can use the Shared Documents folder for any that you are happy to share more or less with anyone.

If they work for you and you don't need frequent access that's probably the best solution.  Cool
Network access between XP and W7 can be a little problematic at times
(I'm a supposed IT expert and do it regularly but I still encounter unexpected problems  Lips_are_sealed )
