Internet Explorer wil not connect.

My PC has suddenly decided not to connect to the net!!  On looking into this problem I get  'error 12029 Connection to server could not be established'.  I can still use Outlook Express to send emails OK so that seems to show my connection to router is working and my Plusnet account is valid etc.
My laptop still connects normally via the same router.
Any help or advice would be much apprciated.
OS is XP Pro.

Try clicking on your "C" Drive with the right mouse button and select disk scan, then do a full disk defragg.

Seconded Oldjim.  Wink
I've seen quite a few systems lately where somehow proxy servers had been set, messing up IE connections.

Thanks Oldjim have done that and all is exactly as your pic.
Also done full defrag as suggested, no change in access.

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

can you see the router from IE8 - put in the address of the router http://192.168.1.254 or http://192.168.0.1/ are the usual ones

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

Not able to connect to router via IE but I run a program called RouterStats-Lite that monitors my speed and noise ratio continuously and that is reporting as normal.
My radio link to router shows packets both ways.

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

Have you tried another browser from the same 'offending' computer?

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

Not tried another 'browser'.  Not sure how I'm going to do that as I think there is only IE loaded.

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

You can download it like Oldjim said on the other computer that does work.
Alternatively, open Calculator Start --> Run and type in calc, then click OK, then click on Help --> Help Topics.
Top left corner, click on the 'piece of paper with a question mark' icon (in line with the close X) and select jump to url, then in the box that pops up, type in http://getfirefox.com

Somehow???  It's a computer virus (or "malware').  Even if your security software removes the virus, the proxy settings remain.  The point of the proxy is to control and monitor your internet connection.  But when the proxy server gets taken down by the authorities you lose your internet connection if the virus is not still active or smart enough to change to a new proxy server.
However that doesn't seem to be the problem here.  I would try Internet Explorer (No add-ons), to be found under Programs - Accessories - System Tools.  After it opens, try going to your home page.  If it loads now then an add-on is blocking your connection.

Often true, but can equally result from correct use on a corporate network or VPN.

Re: Internet Explorer wil not connect.

Have you tried shutting everything down, PC and router for 15 minutes then restarting the router and then the PC when the router is fully up and connected.
There is also a Reset in IE...Tools...Internet Options...Advanced (but note the advisory).
