XP installs from the CD fine but on the initial reboot it hangs when it would do the checks and I had to do a Vista repair to get it atleast working.
So is my only option to nuke my Vista install and start from scratch or can XP be installed after Vista?

The important bit is the part about the boot loader.
Vista doesn't use the same boot loader as previous versions of Windows so there are a few hoops to jump through.

Windows Vista no longer starts after you install an earlier version of the Windows operating system ...
Although what Paul_B has said is correct, instead of creating a new partition you are just using an alternate HDD.

Quote from: James_H Yep looks to make sense to me - Not sure about the EasyBCD though - isn't it easier to just modify the boot.ini manually to add the record pointing to the XP install?
Ie, add in the record below under the entry for Vista.
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
That would be using a pre-Vista boot.ini though would it not? The Microsoft KB article states that the process would be:
Quote
- Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
- Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=x:
Note In this command, x: is the drive letter for the active partition.
- Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr
- Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast

Installed and got XP running
Installed all misc software and the one game I got it for LOTR.
Got in LOTR and found Voice chat was buggy, decided to reinstall as I had used a backup copy from vista.
Reinstalled and rebooted and hey Microsoft/Presto my secondary admin account had been deleted and only had the default left.
Thought sod XP I'll fix it later and rebooted in Vista to find that the XP install had corrupted my Vista install of LOTR. Times like these I really hate that someone had not hit Bill Gates with something harder than a few cakes ie lead pellet.
