Does anyone have any experience of mounting a touchscreen TFT in a car? Am quite interested in haxing something up into my FTO as the radio that it came with is awful (can barely hold onto an FM signal and the blue screen is way too bright for night driving).

You can get one that replaces the radio, in a single DIN slot (it pops out).
You'd still need an actual PC somewhere - perhaps based on an Epia mobo.

I'd like to have something flush mounted to get rid of the old stuff in the double height slots. I have an old laptop that I'd need to put back together but that shouldn't be too hard.

Have a look on eBay at "EONON" car entertainment systems, I bought a great EONON system a couple of years ago and am still very happy with it.
Don't be put off by being locating in Hong Kong, mine arrived about 4 days after I ordered it, although allow £20..£30 import duty.
It is very easy to hook up a PC to one of these -

Also be sure to check out http://www.mini-itx.com as thats quite inspirational and is also UK based. I've never ordered any parts from them but I've heard good things else where.
Also don't use spinning hard drives - they don't like shocks and bumps a great deal. Use solid state hard drives instead (more expensive but shock resistant as they have no moving parts).
