Plenty of free AV programs out there, I just wish there were more free, and decent, firewalls to be had. I was a ZA user since its earliest releases, but recently had to bin it because it interfered severely with my bt client (well, that pushed me to bin it, it's been cranky for a while now - since being bought by CheckPoint). With great regret I am using Comodo, which I detest for its insane complexity and default setting of just letting everything connect to the internet. If you want to change that you have to get a degree in computing.

Trouble is AV is only as good as the person using the PC.
I installed the same security programs on my PC & laptop as well as SWMBO's and my daughter's.
I have never had an infection yet both SWMBO and my daughter have. In SWMBO's case so severe a complete windows re-install was required.
Why? Because neither had bothered to update the database files or even run a scan for many months, if at all.
SWMBO has learnt her lesson and now does weekly scans.

You mean that they relied on an antivirus without automatic updates

Nope, but no antivirus software will catch everything: Malwarebytes, Spybot help and these don't have auto-updates in the free versions.
