IE 8 problem

I'm not a computer expert but I've just about managed to re-install WindowsXP following a malware attack that completely messed me up.
I have installed Internet Explorer 8. I'm using Avast (free version) as my Anti-virus and a free firewall by Sunbelt.
I can get internet access OK (after a lot of time wasted looking for drivers!).
My problem is that there are some sites that I access a lot where I cannot see any buttons or photographs. Could this be something to do with my firewall settings, or is it some adjustment that I need to make to the Anti-virus software?
Help appreciated.

Re: IE 8 problem

A lot of buttons, etc. use Java. Did you reinstall that?

Re: IE 8 problem

I have installed Java (TM) 6 Update 20 - is that sufficient or is it just an update?

Re: IE 8 problem

Can you find a webpage that is really bad and post the URL here so we can look at the page source, and for others to try in IE8 to see if the fault can be reproduced.

Re: IE 8 problem

E.g. http://www.wildlife-galleries.co.uk/gallery2/main.php
where I store photos, and
http://www.surreymothing.blogspot.com/
which also has some of my photos that I cannot see.
Even loading this thread took for ever and then it said 'done but with errors on page'.

Re: IE 8 problem

UPdate: I think I've got things sorted, after a fashion. I altered my firewall settings to allow ads on 'exceptional sites' and then typed in the URLs of the two sites I was having problems with. It's not a perfect solution in that I quite like looking at other blogs, too, but it will do for now.  Cool
BTW I find this forum incredibly slow to load. It makes it almost unusable in terms of looking at other people's threads. Is this a general problem or just me? Is it my firewall causing more problems?

Perhaps try using Firefox instead ? http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
Fewer compatibility problems, faster web browsing, and the benefit of plugins such as "Adblock Plus".  Smiley

Strange, because changing the firewall settings seemed to make a difference - to start with at least. But I've done what you suggest and ticked 'compatibility view' for the Surreymothing blog and I cannot get the photos to display. Maybe I need to re-refresh it. I'll experiment.

I had Firefox with Noscript and Adblock before I had to reinstall Windows XP (thanks to some malware). I found all the script blocking a bit stressful as I never knew what to allow and what not to allow  Wink

Well I've installed Firefox and the situation is no better (except that I cannot see the little red 'x's in the photos that don't upload.
Could someone else have a look at http://www.surreymothing.blogspot.com/ and see if it works for them?
Also, this forum is still incredibly slow.
So I think the problem is to do with Sunbelt Personal Firewall.
