IDE to SATA

A friend has a  knackerd his PC fried his Motherboard , has bought a lappy to replace it .
Problem is he has files on his HD he needs obviously there is no connection from lappy to his HD , which i have removed .
My PC is all SATA no IDE connection , which is the easiest way to gain access to his HD to put on a USB to transfer to his lappy Smiley

Buy an external USB/IDE adapter or caddy. Cheap as chips.  Wink

Re: IDE to SATA

You can get a usb to ide cable, with a psu for a few quid from ebay. Or a case as has been suggested, depends on what size the old disk was, and whether they will ever use it again.
Or something like this would probably be more useful.

Re: IDE to SATA

I remember a couple of years back when I needed a docking station, I looked at the model that 'Hairy McBiker' linked to - as it looked just what I needed.  However, after much research and reading reviews, I discovered that many people found them to be poor quality - because the plastic parts broke after a few uses, or the USB connection became unreliable.
The one I bought was this - Sharkoon QuickPort Combo, and have been very pleased with it !,
I buy hard drives from eBay, probably averaging about one per month, and use this docking station to perform initial tests, surface scans, data wiping, etc - before each drive gets deployed into whatever my current project is.  It is also very useful for backing up any PC, just plug in a bare drive, copy across what you want to archive, then remove the drive and store it safely away from the original machine.
It may also be worth looking at these other models to see if another type better suits your needs - Sharkoon docking stations

I've got two of those. Well, actually one is SATA/IDE the other is Dual SATA.

I may have misunderstood, but my reading of the original post was that this was essentially a one-off transfer so maybe the quality's not so important, so long as it works once  Undecided
