I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

Ok the basic OS is free.  However, I scanned a document and went to open it with acrobat.  It then refused to open it unless I subscribe to acrobat.  I had this for free with my previous OS (Win7).
Can I revert to Win7? I really don't like the layout or the way that programs are 'hidden' or the fact that 'Edge' doesn't import passwords from Firefox.

Just goes to prove the old adage..."If it ain't broke - don't fix it" !    Sad

If I try to open a pdf document it opens in the Edge browser.
Acrobat was never free but the reader should be https://get.adobe.com/reader/?loc=uk
You have a month to revert to Windows 7.

It opens in Edge browser, but you can't edit it.  How do I revert?

But you can't edit PDF's in the free Acrobat reader either......  Huh
I'm not aware of a free PDF editor included with Windows 7 either.

Re: I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

If you bought a copy of Acrobat to edit pdf documents then it is possible it has been confused by the change of OS and thinks it is not licenced.  You need to take this up with Adobe; it's nothing to do with Microsoft.

Re: I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

I basically agree with ReedRichards' comment.  The update to Win 10 keeps most licencing intact, but it is quite likely Adobe do their licencing in an unusual way.
Or maybe you were not using acrobat but an alternative free pdf editor and had that associated with pdf's on Win 7?
The upgrade has broken file associations.

Re: I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

Foxit Reader is exactly what it says, a reader.  OP needs to edit PDFs.
As an aside, I used to use Foxit for reading as a considerable improvement on the Adobe Reader.  However, Foxit got worse and the Adobe Reader improved, so I have switched back.  That of course is a personal choice, but you might want to retry the Adobe Reader.

Re: I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

Given my experience with Adobe licensing - a simple disk clone to a larger hard drive in the same system caused the product to become unlicensed and I needed to license it again.
One problem is that if it is Acrobat Standard 7 or Acrobat Pro 8 the licensing server is no longer there

Re: I thought Win 10 was supposed to be free

A lot of the PDF markup tools that were formerly restricted to the paid versions are now in the free app (the desktop version, not the tablet-style Reader app) from Adobe, but there are downsides to that -- I uninstalled it from my work machine when I was still running Win8 because it refused to honour my choice to make my Acrobat 9 Pro the default, and it takes up a lot of the screen with 'upselling' sidebars that won't go away.  My licensed copy of Acrobat Pro 9 on Win 8 took half an hour to 'configure' itself when I upgraded to Win10, but it worked fine after that. Funnily enough that didn't happen on the machine that was previously running Win7.
