Yep, we've got this one flagged up within the CSC as I'm sure we'll get some calls from people too. Plus may drive a bit more traffic if people decide to download a different browser.

I think perhaps you should translate this for the non-techies.

It means that they have told the Customer Service Centre about the upcoming update and options screen - such that the people on those teams can research and be prepared when the predicted influx of questions comes along.

I'm not sure exactly how this is coming out at present. Seen it appear on one PC (of several) and decided to "hide" the update.
Other PC's it's not being offered (yet).  Undecided

I got this update on the 23rd, it just unpinned my IE8, then i pinned it again, quite a pointless update really.

Re: I am now waiting for a bunch of questions from novice users who are on IE8

I have just read and signed the online petition:
"No to Microsoft's Automatic Update for the Web Browser Choice Screen"
hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/t647lf75/
I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too.  If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself.
Best wishes,
P.S.
I am keeping Internet Explorer v6, but I do use Firefox 3.5.2 as well in Sandboxed.

a better explanation is here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8537763.stm

Although the update has been prepared for Windows XP, Vista and 7, not all users will see it.
It will not pop up in front of those who already run a different default browser, such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

Quote
The Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer browsers are randomly ordered on the first section of this screen.
The browser choice comes as part of an anti-trust deal
Another seven browsers, namely Sleipnir, Green Browser, Maxthon, Avant, Flock, K-meleon, and Slim, will be randomly ordered on the rest of the screen. They can be viewed by scrolling sideways.
Below each listing will be a button giving more information. Another button lets users install one of the browsers.

Re: I am now waiting for a bunch of questions from novice users who are on IE8

Sorry, but I am confused - as usual!
I run Windows7.
For almost all of my browser work, I use Firefox. However, there is one site for which I am forced to use IE. It just doesn't work with Firefox, even if I tell FF to 'pretend' it's Internet Explorer.
The site is my Medical Centre and, on line, I can book appointments with my doctor, nurse, clinic, order my repeat prescription, and so on. It is so useful to be able to do these things from home rather than having to go to the centre on the bus, just to do them.
My question is, will I still be able to run both browsers, or will I only be allowed to run one? It's not at all clear on the BBC News feed, or on the statements which have been put out.
By the way, I complained a couple of years ago to the Area Health Authority IT people about writing the site so that it is only useable with IE. They didn't reply, so I can only assume that they are not interested.
I would like to find the answer before I receive the 'choice' box.
Many thanks.

You are wasting your time.
Microsoft are doing it because they have to - not because they want to, or because they think its a nice thing to do.
Why not petition for all wheels to be made square - its about as valid a use of your time.

Sir - your question is a daft one - you have already answered it yourself in your post.

You can use as many, or as few as you desire.

Re: I am now waiting for a bunch of questions from novice users who are on IE8

Sorry, James_G. I didn't think that asking if it would be an 'either IE or another browser, but not both' choice, was a daft question.
It wasn't clear to me and I just asked if it could be clarified.
I asked a question in a polite manner, and was hoping for a polite answer, not to be told that I was daft.

Re: I am now waiting for a bunch of questions from novice users who are on IE8

Read my reply - I didn't call you daft - I merely pointed out that your question was daft.
You already state you use two different browsers on your computer.
Then you ask whether it is possible to have more than one browser.
The only thing that has changed is that Microsoft have been forced by the High Court to make it clear to people that other browsers exist.
Nothing has changed other than that.
