How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

I thought I had got rid of my Facebook account about 2 years ago, but just in case, I tried to log on just now. I expected the logon to fail, but no, I got access and found loads of stuff waiting there for me, even as recent as yesterday, so how do I kill it reliably?

When I've done that, I want to kill off my Gmail account too. I only had it because Facebook wouldn't accept my PlusNet email address (don't know why).

Judging by a recent post in the Emails section of the forum, it may be one or other of these accounts that could be causing one of my 'incoming email' problems

Hi there, try this link...

A float tip is pleasing in its appearance and even more pleasing in its disappearance.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

Thankyou Pete11. I have tried your method, but ran into a problem, where having gone down that link and selecting 'Delete Your Account', I get to the point where I put in my password. I assume I am using the correct password, but just below there is a message about 'if the image doesn't show, use I cannot remember the word they used to refresh the view'. I use the Refresh symbol at the top of the page but it just takes me back to the previous page where I selected 'Delete Your Account'.

Having gone round that loop, I have given up. What have I done wrong?

So log yourself out and log yourself back in again (entering the password explicitly if your web browser remembers it).  Of course you'll have the faff of resetting the password if it turns out you have forgotten it.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

I've just reset my password, but it hasn't changed the Delete problem. I still cannot "reload to refresh the image" it says should be visible. By Reload, does it mean the circular arrow at the top of the screen, or is there something I haven't spotted that does the reload?

Not sure what you mean exactly but the image usually refers to an image of numbers or letters to enter in a password box. And refresh the image is to renew this image by pressing a button near the password box. Sometimes "refresh the image" is the button.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

When I click on Delete Your Account, a window opens, on which it asks for my password, and just below that, there is a small square that looks like a typical box you get when an image is there but not open. Next to this square is the message:-

"Hit reload on your browser to refresh this page if this image doesn't load"

(I wrote the message down this time so that I could quote it verbatim)

This happens every time. The only thing I know of that does a screen refresh is that circular arrow at the top of the main window. When I click on that, it puts me back to the previous window where I had clicked on Delete Your Account.

My opinion is the same as yours in that I expect an image of numbers and/or letters which I would be required to type in, but until I can see it, I cannot tell what I have to type

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

I suppose you've done the usual things like clear browser cache or try a different browser.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

I haven't done either of those, but then (1) I don't know how to clear the browser cache, and (2) how do I try a different browser?

Sorry, but even after all these years there are a lot of things I don't know about. I just turn on my computer and use whatever is on it.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

Fix

I don't like updating things as long as they work. Something similar happened to me a while back in that I couldn't get past a web pages security options. In the end I bit the bullet and updated my browser which solved my problem. So that is a possible with your problem maybe? That the browser just needs updating.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

My browser is Internet Explorer 11, and the automatic update box is ticked. I have been unable to find a way of updating it manually.

Just in case the problem is the operating system, I'm still using Win 7, and have no wish to upgrade to Win 10

If you want to try clearing the cache in IE11, hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys, then press Delete.

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

I've just remembered that my son used my pc a while back, and put Chrome on my pc, so I went on there to log in to Facebook. I was then able to go through the Delete Account process without problem - it will be gone in about two weeks or at least I will have about two weeks to change my mind.

I will wait until the end of April to kill off my Gmail account, just in case there is still a problem with Facebook

My thanks for your help

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

Thanks JayG, your reply has added to the sum of my knowledge (now about 2 things) but billnotben's suggestion about trying a different browser has done the trick with the 'killing Facebook account' problem

Re: How do you kill off a Facebook account or a Gmail account?

Not the first example of IE11 behaving differently from Chrome (and for the worse) - there's an on-going issue with PlusNet's own Service Status page which loads in Chrome but not in IE11.

Glad you've got it sorted anyway. Smiley
