How do you find what programs start automatically at bootup?

I want to check these things in case any downloads have installed starting at bootup that dont need to start then.
Will stopping these improve my pc speed?

start>run>msconfig
in panel that appears go to startup and untick what you dont need to start then
go to services tab and do the same click apply when finished

There is a program called "Autoruns" http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx that does a vastly more comprehensive job than msconfig but the problem with either program is that you get no indication what the start-up programs actually do. Disabling the wrong ones, particularly the Microsoft ones could stop you computer from loading Windows in the worst case.

Startup Inspector from http://www.windowsstartup.com/ has a reasonable database of program functions and gives you the option to disable or permanenetly remove startup programs.

CClesaner is also good for showing you what programs start automaticaly on boot and and allowing you to disable them.
