How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

(Unfortunately) my daughter has asked for a replacement laptop for one with a hardware fault.
It is a Windows 10 replacement for Windows 7.  Sad
Does anyone know of a link to some instructions on what to do to gain a little privacy?
(Other than loading Linux of course!).

Re: How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

1. Remove  hard drive from new laptop
2. purchase a similar size new HDD
3. Install the new HDD
3a. if necessary purchase a copy of Windows 7 professional
4. Install Windows 7 professional.
5. Start to install all the updates, ( leave it overnight)
6. make sure you DO NOT install KB 3035583  ( Win 10 update nag)
7. install all other useful programs
8. copy files and folders from old machine ( using Linux and a caddy if necessary).
9. install files and folders copied from old machine.
10 Good Luck.  Wink

Use local user names on the PC to log in to Windows and not the Microsoft logins that they try so hard to push you towards.

Useful article in Computer Active (Issue 466) entitled :-
Change your Windows 10 SETTINGS NOW!
The 52 hidden settings you must switch (because Microsoft's defaults are not safe)

Re: How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

Thanks @Spoon Whittler - I'd seen that about Microsoft logins.
@shutter - I'm very keen to offer M$ as much money as possible.
But your method would probably fail since the new disk is 1TB and the old one is 500GB.
Not to mention that I would have to muck about with secure boot in the EFI BIOS.
@NedLudd - do I have to pay money for that magazine?

Erm... no ... you don`t have to muck about with secure boot..... cos you are installing a NEW hard drive.... of whatever size you decide your daughter will need,... even 1tb.. !... and then .. if you had read my instructions, carefully numbered, so you would not get lost... you would be installing a FRESH copy of WIN 7 Professional.. which does not have " secure boot"...

I'm not paying for a extra disk and an extra expensive Windows.

Re: How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

Well - I've finally (almost) got Windows 10 to install.
Had to remove some rubbish - antivirus, Office and install a couple of browsers.
Big lack of any performance monitoring tools and install/rebooting is incredibly slow.

This can be quite handy but do read the instructions carefully before running the script.

Also useful for keeping those telemetry updates away from your Windows 7 and 8{.1] machines.

Re: How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

Slow boot, try turning off Fast Startup. It slowed down my machine which boots from a SDD so without Fast Startup it took 10 seconds, with took 55!

Re: How do I reduce Windows 10 phoning home?

I don't want a PC to sleep when it claims to have shutdown.
I can see why people pay good money for SSD's just to get decent response times.
A new Windows 10 is taking one minute to power up and sign on to a single user.
It also takes about 45 seconds to shut down!!!
BTW I'm so impressed by security on Windows 10 that I'm booting into a single user as Admin without a password.
Just like everyone did with XP.
I'm strongly unimpressed with Windows 10.
