Help with heatsink please

Hi
I have descovered with the expertise of Oldjim that my core temp is getting high and i want to change my heatsink and fan for a bigger better one
The only problem is i am not sure what i should be looking for i know Amd and Intel will be different but not sure if most heatsinks will fit or what i should look for
Jim recommended the following
4. Remove the CPU cooler and clean the CPU and cooler mating faces with a proper cleaning solution so that you have two absolutely clean surfaces
5  Reseat the heat sink using Arctic Silver 5  in accordance with the instructions
I thought as i am going to this trouble i may as well replace heatsink and fan for a better one
My Specs are below so if i can be directed to the appropriate heatsink or type i would greatly appreciate it.
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-MA74GM-S2H
Enclosure Type: Desktop
2.93 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache

3328 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
Slot 'A0' has 2048 MB
Slot 'A1' has 2048 MB

Many Thanks

Re: Help with heatsink please

Your Motherboard is an AM2+/AM3 socket. so you need a cooler compatible with that type of socket.
Here's a selection of coolers http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/CPU+Coolers/?x=12&p_order=pri... , check it for AM2/AM3 compatible ones.
I use this one on my dual core Athlon for example http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/CPU+Coolers/Arctic+Cooling+Fr...

Re: Help with heatsink please

Hi MisterW
Thanks for your input but i was going to order the same one as you but when i went to their site
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_43&mID=133&language=en
they say this is only compatible for a single core so i am a bit unsure if this is the right one
Also it says fitted in seconds , will i not have to get the heat resistant compound and put that on before fitting ?

from the website
Quote
Only compatible with Single CPU motherboards

It means a single physical CPU not a single core.

It comes with thermal paste pre-applied

Thermal Interface Material: Pre-applied MX-1 / MX-2 Paste

Edit: check there is sufficient room in your case ( especially if its a small or low-profile case ) because that cooler is quite large.

They're good value and a pretty good cooler. My dual core Athlon sits at about 34 Deg with the fan spinning at 1000rpm and the great thing is, its QUIET!. Yes, there are better coolers around but they are much more expensive.

Re: Help with heatsink please

Even though the new heatsink will have thermal paste already applied, make sure you clean any old paste from the CPU before fixing the new heatsink.

Re: Help with heatsink please

The following cooler supports all of the current and most of the past Intel and AMD sockets, so if you change to an Intel motherboard you can use it.
