usb external burners are so cheap anyway

  Success!!  Just had time to download "ifrarecorder" as Jim suggested and had no trouble burning a whole file of photos to CD.  So it must be OK,  just the software needed, must have got lost somewhere !!
Thanks so much for all the help to a " noddy " .

If that software worked, then maybe, just maybe, you need to do the "disconnect" bit and re-istall the driver when the computer "recognises" the dvd on re-fitting and re-booting.

Thanks Shutter for the offer of the guide for Irfanview, I have sent you an email address.  Hope you got the message !!  I might get adventurous and try to do a bit more burning to disc.  Probably don't need to bother about the unplug bit,  if it  works with Irfanview and Infrarecorder !!  They seem better programmes than I was using before anyway.
