Hard Drive Encryption

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/12/30/microsoft_hard_drive_encryption_keys/
Quote
Whenever you first log into a new Windows 10 computer or device using a Microsoft account, the OS quietly and automatically encrypts the internal storage drive, and uploads a recovery key to Redmond's OneDrive servers. While you're logged into your machine, your data is decrypted and accessible. If someone steals your PC or tablet, and they don't know your password, they shouldn't be able to get at your files because they can't decrypt them.
Now my question is somewhat basic
Why would I want all my internal drives encrypting as opposed to only the sensitive files/folders

You wouldn't... but the security services would prefer it that way because then they can lock up your data at will... yet still access it themselves.
You got to read between the lines when it comes to mickeysoft and its Win10 sponsoring chums..
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

I'd much rather choose which folders/files on which drives are encrypted myself and not have these choices made for me.
Reading further it seems you can turn this off so will do that later on my laptop which is the only device running W10.

Re: Hard Drive Encryption

I followed the link in the 'the register' article to view my decryption key and was informed there isn't one so I assume my drive isn't encrypted Smiley

If you haven't logged on to the PC using a Microsoft Account there shouldn't be

Re: Hard Drive Encryption

I seem to recall there being a choice to enable bit locker or not when first setting up the pc ensuring everyone had the choice to use it or not

Re: Hard Drive Encryption

I have never opted-in to Bitlocker.  I dual-boot between Windows 10 and Windows 7 and I can see the contents of my Windows 10 drive from Windows 7 so it cannot be encrypted.  Was that a shoal of red herrings that just swam past?
Edit:  Yes, I log-in with a Microsoft account

Re: Hard Drive Encryption

If you login as someone else can you still access your files?
That's how encryption works - if you give it a key then you can access all your files.

And does your hardware support TPM?
AIUI automatic encryption only occurs on hardware with TPM support

Re: Hard Drive Encryption

I doubt that my hardware supports TPM.  How does one tell?  Is there a 'BIOS' setting to turn it on or off?
