HP Laptop not allowing password key entry.

I have an oldish HP laptop running Windows XP.

The laptop does not find the wireless router connection when searching for the router and i therefore cannot enter router password.I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the wireless adaptor. I have also tried adding the router to my wireless network configuration.Still no luck.Any suggestions would be appreciated.Thanks.

Re: HP Laptop not allowing password key entry.

Not really much to go on as we don't know which HP laptop, wireless adapter or router but it could just simply be that the wireless card does not support whatever radio frequency/channel the router is set to.

Re: HP Laptop not allowing password key entry.

Or as you say the laptop is old it may only support wireless 'G' whilst the router may be set to 'N only' or later.  If that is the case you will probably find a setting in the router for something more suited to your needs such as 'G/N' or 'G' only if you have no 'N' devices.  Obviously you need to login to the router to change that setting which will involve using an Ethernet cable if the laptop is the only device you have.

Does the Network Neighbourhood show any WiFi connections for your neighbours?

THINK Twice before you proceed putting your XP computer on the Internet.

I have an old HP desktop PC running XP mine connected perfectly, but I did set it up with the cable, then switched on wireless connection with no problems.

I updated my software online, foolishly from a Microsoft link, a lesson learnt.

My desktop is now useless due to Crytowall Virus 3.0-------- everything is locked up, totally useless due to dam scammers who are demanding large amounts of cash to provide a key to unlock software!

once this virus locks everything up, you cannot even Format your hard drive!

computer keeps you out.

IF you do still want to get online, make sure you Back everything up first!   Just as a precaution.

once virus in you will not be able to open anything up, I have spent hours deleting the virus, but it keeps growing.

IF I was you, keep your XP system off the internet, as there is no support from Microsoft anymore.

I even have McAfee software on system and that was updated regularly,

JUST be careful, do not update your software online, as the scammers can attack your XP software.

there is loads of info about Cryptowall virus 3.0 targeting XP computers!

Plusnet could not help me, so now having to take computer to a specialist, as the hard drive needs formatting outside of my PC.

It wasn't a Microsoft link i.e.a link to a Microsoft web site.  I'm afraid you just didn't look carefully enough where the link was taking you.

Re: HP Laptop not allowing password key entry.

How very odd.

It came up saying Microsoft, and to update, which I did!

IF that is the case like you say, then why the hell didn't my McAfee software that's provided by PlusNet catch the virus?

I know when I rang PlusNet, they said they could not help me get rid of it.

So annoying.

Strange thing is I updated my Vista laptop from the same link as far as I know,  & put windows 7 on it!  .

Have taken that in to be formatted and a genuine windows 7 to be installed, and some more memory

 Lifes little mysteries

But thank you for the info, its now got me wondering!

Re: HP Laptop not allowing password key entry.

It could be a complete coincidence that you updated things at the same(ish) time. The link yoou followed could well have been genuine. None of us here know, and probably never will.
