We need some good info about the spec needed to run photoshop cs3. We have now decided to get a desk top rather than a laptop and the spec we are looking at is as follows
AMD Phenom 9750 Quad cors Skt
Motherboard Asus M2N
Memory 4gb
Hard drive 1 - 250gb
Hard Drive 2 - 500gb
Optical drive 1 - 20xDVDRW
Graphics - 512mb Nvidia Geforce 9600GT
PC1 Slot - 54mbps wireless Lan
Please could anyone show any light on whether this spec will run such programmes as photoshop cs3 without any problems.

That spec looks like it could pretty much plot (and render) the paths of each individual particle from the big bang without breaking too much of a sweat (by that I mean it's very powerful... sorry). Unless it's significantly cheaper I'd say go for an Intel Core2 processor over the AMD, but it won't make a lot of difference.
Honestly you don't need spec like that for photoshop. a 2GHz dual core with 2GB ram, a 250GB hard drive and at least 128MB graphics card will do that easily, and should be a fair bit cheaper.
Hope that helps,

Re: Graphics intensive PC

The only thing to note is that with a 32 bit operating system Photoshop won't see much more than about 1.7GB of RAM so if you are going to be using some very memory intensive plugins you might want to consider a 64 bit operating system. Although Photoshop can't address the extra memory directly I understand that it can be used as a cache for the scratch disk data.
Have a read of this as a start http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance/msg/359b53a9a5...

Re: Graphics intensive PC

4 gig of ram on a 32 bit pc can cause problems as it take sup some of the address space used by the graphics card and can cause crashes so stick to 2 or 3 gig. Are you using cs3 or cs3 extended as the extended version can use 3d which takes more power but as others have said unless you are doing a lot and need high speed.
Adobe states cs3 needs
Windows
    * Intel® Pentium® 4, Intel Centrino®, Intel Xeon®, or Intel Core™ Duo (or compatible) processor
    * Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified for 32-bit editions)
    * 512MB of RAM
    * 64MB of video RAM
    * 1GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)
    * 1,024x768 monitor resolution with 16-bit video card
    * DVD-ROM drive
    * QuickTime 7 software required for multimedia features
    * Internet or phone connection required for product activation
