Re: Graphics card or PSU?

Jim I am loath to go downwards I went for the 500W on the assumption that it would work, and it doesn't, I don't want to make the same mistake with a 600W one.

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

As budget busting as it may be get yourself either a 900W (for future, future proofing) or a 750W as also suggested.

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

Could it be that the PSU isn't to blame?

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

It's possible that the PSU isn't to blame, it sounds like the graphics card is shutting down though, have the temperatures been checked? Sorry if that's already been looked at!
Not sure how accurate this is, but should give you an idea of the PSU you need: http://powersupplycalculator.net/

I've also had a kettle lead melt on me.
The plug (with 13A fuse) just gave off acrid smoke and melted.
Many IEC 'kettle lead' C13 mains cables are only rated at 6 Amps, so having a 13A fuse fitted in the wall plug doesn't seem right !  Crazy

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

I know, possibly I replaced it at some time.
I tried http://powersupplycalculator.net/ - I have a distinctly moderate graphics card (no fan attached) but a quad 4.2GHz CPU and
says I should have a 750W PSU - but I only have a 450W PSU.
I don't play games, but I do remux video files and nothing bad ever happens.

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

I'd start looking at the RAM and Graphics card for faults if replacing the PSU hasn't done much good, firing up a game and it conking out could be indicative of dying RAM on either the graphics card or in the RAM slots...

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

Well it reckons 457W for my rig.
So the 500W may just be on the edge.
Searching shows:
125W for processor AMD FX-8350
GeForce GTX 760 - 30A @12V = 360W (Source)
485W just on the 12V line.
Add 2 hdd's etc.

This one is rated at 432W.
OK that is flat out, but it maybe still a ball park.
Ram hasn't changed and was new last year. The games were playing using my old card (AMD 210) so don't think it is the system ram.
Will see what happens with a new psu (next month)

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

After a couple of issues with power supplies as mentioned before I paid upward of £100 for my current one which is around 3 years old now and I hope to get a fair good few more miles from it.

the biggest problem is a non modular psu only has the single 12v output so it overheats if your chugging everything out of the main 12v line constantly and any dodgy solder can become an issue then.
I would also look at the list from other suppliers for instance https://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/power-supplies/computer-psu-atx-power-supply-unit-... as the price can vary by a fair bit for the same item from one to another, of course some charge higher delivery fees so factoring everything in is the hardest part on getting the bargain once you've chose the item you want,
I would also ask if you uninstalled the old gfx drivers including the PhysX software before you installed the new ones ? along with any application software, its not unheard of for hard faults to occur because of driver conflicts, and whilst its probably not the ram it never hurts to run a test on it, i'd also check all the connectors are firmly seated, even the ones you didn't disconnect when changing the psu, it wouldn't be the first time simply moving the case randomly caused something to wriggle loose and cause a power problem.
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Re: Graphics card or PSU?

I unistalled all the software.
I bought the 700W unit I listed above. Same issue so returned the card as faulty.
Will just have to wait to get another one.
