Googlemail blocked access from Thunderbird

Just found that Googlemail now considers Thunderbird to be a Less Secure App and blocked access from it

Since Thunderbird hasn't changed I believe I suspect it is Google playing silly sods

Any thoughts

Yep you can change your settings in gmail to allow less secure apps. (includes the gmail app !) Or you can activate 2 stage authentication using your phone #.

I just allowed less secure apps but it seems to be rather silly
