Google Maps

Looks like Google have ditched the old style Google Maps page....
I have tried my "old style" bookmark, and keep getting a message saying that firefox has determined the page will never open...
tried the "?" and "prefer classic google maps" .. got the same thing... then .. tried again.. 3rd time.. and get Google Maps Lite version..  Angry
Wassup with these geezers.... don`t they understand the saying....  " If it ain`t broke .... don`t fix it "...

Re: Google Maps

Yup and I hate the new compulsory one - if it wasn't for streetview I wouldn't use it

Re: Google Maps

no-one is forcing anyone to use google maps.
as they say, if you don't like it then go elsewhere.
there are plenty other online map sources.

Re: Google Maps

Aside to the main topic, but relevant to those interested in maps.
Many people don't know that Bing maps has an OS map option (see dropdown in the top left of the map area itself).
There is a very useful Chrome plugin called MapJumper (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/mapjumper?hl=en) that allows you to move the the same area from another map provider (eg between Google, Bing maps, Open Street Map and a couple of others).  Very useful as the different map providers have different strengths and weaknesses.

Re: Google Maps

Be very careful in using Bing OS Map as they are at least a few years out of date

Re: Google Maps

Has something just changed
I now get this using Firefox but it works in IE and it isn't a cookie problem
Found it - my default is to the classic map and that is what is stored somewhere except I can't find where but it defaults to http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?output=classic&dg=oo
Sorted - it was either in google.com or google.co.uk not maps.google.com as I removed all those cookies to sort it

satellite images on google maps are 15 years out of date in my area, whereas in bing they are much more recent.

Re: Google Maps

@ chenks76
Which really confirms that there isn't a viable alternative as streetview is really limited

Re: Google Maps

Interesting ... I wonder how out of date Bing is.  My paper map is equally out of date.
Hampshire rights of way don't show the old route as a right of way at all.  http://maps.hants.gov.uk/rowreporting/default.aspx

Re: Google Maps

they are correct insofar as it isn't there on the ground even though it hasn't been removed from the OS Map

Re: Google Maps

@ O.J.  I was getting the same screen as in your screen shot... from my "old bookmark"...
are you now saying you have found how to get the old google maps back.. or are you, like me,.... having to put up with the new style "lite" version...  ?

Re: Google Maps

Ah... ok...  Cry Cry Cry
they obviously took no notice of the "feedback" from people who said they preferred the old  version...
( didn`t really expect them to...... )....
