I'm looking for a methodology for storing files, specifically pdf's, my current method appears inefficient and is getting out of hand.
The naming structure I've adopted is based on a file name of (Author, data published, abbreviation of the title) i.e. Aspinall S 2006 Important Bird Areas of the United Arab Emirates.pdf
Thus I can search on the title by part of the subject, by author and year published.
The file structure I've adopted is
root: Dir A dir aa-ad
dir ae-ak
....
Dir B dir ba-bc....
......
Dir C dir ca-cd....
and so on, each file is catalogued using a library catalogue system
I try to limit the number of files to around 150 files per sub directory (a couple of screens worth), the structure is live, I'm adding about a dozen files per week.
Any more efficient ideas would be appreciated, the structure currently sits on a NAS storage array with backups and portable to other systems.
