Re: Fubared CPU?

Whats wrong with XP and SP2 then? Nothing.
Whats wrong with Vista? It doesn't work on your PC.
Nuff said.

It’s a bit of a pain as I want to sell the board and CPU but don’t really feel I can add the proviso, oh and you can’t run Vista on it.

That is why, also clearly there is an underlying problem. It appears ( following more research) that this BSD appears when there is an underlying stability problem in the system. I know it is the fashion to slag of Vista but one could argue that the fact it is doing extensive system checks is a good thing. The fact that XP 'nix and the others will run and then possibly fall over later isn't good.

Re: Fubared CPU?

Has the mobo been overclocked?
This could cause the BSOD and it sounds like vista is more finickity about BIOS speeds.

No. used but not abused, and bios reset and updated.

Re: Fubared CPU?

Does seem rather odd particularly as you are using a modern CPU.
Did it get through the Vista install at all?
Did this occur when you went to activate?

Re: Fubared CPU?

During the install, after the point where files are copied and you get the windows is loading bar for the first time. This seems (according to other reports of installed versions) to be the early point in the OS load where these checks take place. So nothing to do with activation.

Re: Fubared CPU?

Hmmmm have to admit don't know as much about the Vista startup process as I do about XP.

Re: Fubared CPU?

Just a thought.
Have you tried going into the bios and increasing the voltages on the memory and CPU a notch.
Alternately underclock the CPU and see if it makes any difference

Re: Fubared CPU?

Hi Jim
Nope I have tried fail safe and standard settings only. If I get a chance during the week I will rig it up again and give it a try, any recommendations for the voltage increases?
Cheers

Re: Fubared CPU?

As little as possible  Grin
Seriously though there is a fair margin so a jump of 0.2 volts wouldn't hurt
