I'm thinking of swapping from backing up to RW-DVD to on-line so any recommendations for free on-line storage? It needs to be one that is going to be around long term and not a tempter to get me to convert to a paid for service later.
Questions:
Total space available
Maximum individual file size
Speeds (any restrictions?)
Questions:
jelv (a.k.a Spoon Whittler) Why I have left Plusnet (warning: long post!) Broadband: Andrews & Arnold Home::1 (FTTC 80/20) Line rental: Pulse 8 Home Line Rental (£14.40/month) Mobile: iD mobile (£4/month) |

He's since posted what he's using: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,62703.msg506868.html#msg506868
One thing bothers me about this service: the little addition to the logo:

I actually have a totally different approach to backups.
I automatically backup every day to another computer on my home network and vice versa.
The only time this falls over is if the house burns down but I suspect that will be the least of my worries.

I have done a lot of research into on-line storage and backup.
BT Digital Vault looks OK but is a bit clunky and expensive. (1GB free, 5GB for BT Broadband customers, 50GB for £4.95 per month with backup facility)
http://digitalvault.bt.com/base/login.jsp
Much better is AOL’s Xdrive - 5GB free and you get a "Hotmail" style interface. You can also set up a linky to on-line folders in Windows Explorer on your PC. Extra storage, 50 GB $4.99 per month). I use this for on-line storage. If 5GB not enough you can always open another account.
For on-line backup by far the best is Mozy. 2GB free, and for $4.95 per month you get UNLIMITED storage. I have seen reports of some people backing us several 100 GBs. I schedule mine to backup every night (after midnight of course!). It only backups changed files (incremental backup) so initial backup is slow but after that it is quite quick. If you delete a file on your PC it says on Mozy servers for 30 days before it gets deleted - very useful. I usually turn off my PC at night so once a week or so I leave it on and the backup starts at midnight.

Not ideal for on-line storage as it's a back up facility but I have often used it to retrieve a file when I'm working away from my PC. You just login to your account and pick the files you want to restore and then just restore (ie save) on the PC you're working on at the time.
Windows new Live SkyDrive is useless. http://skydrive.live.com/. You can’t do backups and cannot move files between folders.

I've just seen an article about http://www.humyo.com/ in the Personal Computer World weekly newsletter (it apparently allows streaming which may interest some people). Anyone tried it?
