Formatting

I am trying to format a second drive but appear to be having problems.
If I right click the menu contains a format option but for some reason after it appears to format I get a message saying windows was unable to format the drive.
This is a 😧 drive not my C: with the OS on.
We are born into history and history is born into us.

Re: Formatting

Try setting the sector/allocation size to "Default" if it's not already

Re: Formatting

Is this a drive that was already in use on the PC? If so make sure in System Properties that Virtual memory is not allocated on that drive.

Re: Formatting

It sounds as if you are trying to format it the wrong way. You should do it from control panel admin disk manager. If you try and do it via explorer its a bit stupid as you click on the drive and this opens the drive so it cant format it as it has files open. You can sometimes get away with it by opening the format and then closing explorer so the drive isnt locked.
With diskmanager there should be no problem its best to delete the partition first so its all totally clean then create a new partition and format
