Forefox using all of the memory

Hi Folks,
Noticed the last few days the the PC has been running slow. Opening Task Manager, I note Firefox, if left open for more than about 10 minutes with continuous take 99% of the CPU. This is note during a refresh or moving pages.
I ran Lavasoft for spyware and no difference. Running AVG virus scan.
Any ideas?
I have thought about uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling, but how can I save my favourites.

Re: Forefox using all of the memory

Two ways
1. Bookmarks, Organise Bookmarks, Import and backup
2. Install the addon Mozbackup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/
But before doing that - it might be AVG causing the problem

Re: Forefox using all of the memory

Running AVG version 9 (9.0.801). Daft as it seems the only way to turn it off would be to uninstall I think. Is there a better virus scanner? And how would AVG cause Firefox CPU to remain at 99%

Re: Forefox using all of the memory

On the odd occasion I've seen similar behaviour from Firefox on Linux; it's become much more prevalent since I've been using Chrome.
Certainly where Chrome is concerned the culprit is the Flash plugin; I suspect the same is true for Firefox.
Assuming you have Flash installed, see if removing it makes any difference.

Re: Forefox using all of the memory

a lot forum users uninstalled AVG about two months ago and installed the free Avast.  it only seems to affect XP, this machine is on Win 7 and no problem with AVG
