Flash update with unwanted extra

I'm sure I read this on here somewhere a while back but can't find it now.
Last Flash update on Windows also installed some McAfee thing without asking.
Easy enough to uninstal but annoying. Don't want to have to do this everytime.
I don't use the auto-update, but even manual also installs this thing.
Is there a way of preventing it happening?

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

Nope - it tries to push it every time I go to download it.

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

Updated Flash a few days ago, and as usual, it offered McAfee, but there was the usual box to untick.
It's sneaky, and I don't like it - we can only maintain vigilance.  Sad

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

There was no untick box...
Or maybe I'll keep a better eye out for it next time... didn't see one.

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

When I go to Flash Player Download there is an option to unselect McAfee.
It's been there for as long as I can remember.

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

This was a 'semi' auto thing where the update came up in a box on the screen (in front of all other windows until you click something on it).
There was simply the 'download' button (or a 'remind me later button'), and that was it.
Because I wasn't expecting any shenanigans I just clicked thru.
NEXT time I'll be more careful!

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

What is just as annoying is when a download/update you regularly perform without any extras suddenly adds one or more and you nearly miss them.  Angry

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

If you download flash for Windows from a non-Windows computer, it provides you with an approx. 17MB file which contains flash without anything else. This can also be used to install it on multiple computers without downloading it each time.

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

If I remember right,... on the download screen, it is split into three vertical panels.... the middle panel has the Macafee option in it... and you have to remove the tick from the little box, to prevent the download.
I use "Absolute Uninstaller",,... rather than the windows control panel route... it always shows "New"  in RED text ... against any recently installed stuff, so it is easy to pick it out and remove it, if you want to.... Useful to do occasional checks to see what  has been dumped on you ! ! ! ....

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

I regularly go to Program list via control panel and look at the latest dates of programs installed quite often a program that is not wanted as sneaked in, so I uninstall it.

Re: Flash update with unwanted extra

It's things like this which make me make sure that nothing updates automatically on my machine(s). Everything has to be OK'd by me.

Quite right, judge, it's the only way to be these days.

That is also my approach, and shutter has described precisely where the offending checkbox is.
