Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Not sure this really belongs in Chit Chat, but it covers both Windows and Linux.
I am trying to download a Thunderbird add-on, but Firefox insists on trying (and of, course, failing) to install it itself. i'm sure I have done this before, but I can't see a way to get FF just to download the XPI without trying to install it. Any ideas?
The add-on is this one, http://sourceforge.net/projects/tbstats/files/ if it helps.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

What, on Linux Mint? Grin It had occurred to me to install another browser, but there ought to be a solution within FF.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Since you said it  affects windows and Linux I assumed that you had computers running on both

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

It affects both only in general. Never mind, I have installed Epiphany, which downloaded it for me.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

OK, that kind of worked, but only gives coarse statistics. I want something that will give me a range of stats for selected folder(s), including things like number of emails per month, number of people sending repeat and follow-up emails, that sort of thing. Anyone know of anything?
I'll do it manually for now, but it would be useful to have a tool to do some of it.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Have the Thunderbird add-ons window open, then drag and drop the download link from Firefox in to the TB add-ons window.
Alternatively right click the link and save as. Then click Install at the bottom of the TB add-ons and browse to find the file you have just downloaded.
Edit: The first method works for the add-ons you get from Mozilla but not for that add-on from SourceForge Sad

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

I just use "save as" as in FF, it is silly that they use the same extension for both though  Crazy

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Except that the internal mechanism for adding extensions is the same in both and some extensions work in both (and Sunbird).

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

The fact that the s/w is the same doesn't stop them from changing the extension to say xpt for thunderbird. then when you d/l a xpt it will open in thunderbird not in FF.
BTW I don't think this belongs in Linux s/w area as it is not a Linux specific issue (as detailed in the first message),

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

At the moment I can download a single copy of an add on and then add it to both Thunderbird and Firefox. If the extension is changed for Thunderbird it would break that.
In any case the drag and drop method that works for official extensions is so easy and much quicker than downloading I don't see why people see this as an issue.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

No you could simply CHANGE the extension yourself or is that too complicated? And how many extensions are compatible between them 1%?

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Right click and Save As doesn't work, because the link is not direct to the file, but to a bit of html. Save As just downloads a small chunk of html.
And yes, this applies equally to Windows, as both FF and TB are available for it, of course. Just I happen to use Linux here at home.

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Click the link which takes you to the download page (ignore the Firefox prompt about installing).
It now says:

Re: Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons

Tried that - it didn't work, either. Still, its academic now.
