Firefox 6.02 and Google preferences

Since upgrading to Firefox 6.02 the Google preference "Always open search results in a new tab / window" doesn't work - everything opens in the original tab.  I have cookies enabled. Google in  IE 9 works fine.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you looked in preferences and checked that the results window is ticked?
In Google  click on wheel top right >search settings>results .
