On my Ubuntu machines, I usually put the swap into a raid-0 partition to maximize disk performance, it does make a noticeable difference when processing very big files.  Smiley

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

@ HB 191,
I cannot be as lavish as that, only 30GB HD in laptop.
Could go some way towards the ideal like this:-

       /      ext3   12GB      10GB specified as minimum in texts
       swap         1GB        for 512MB RAM
/home  ext3 17GB or as near as I can get them.
Agreed or what?? Could try 2x 14.5 GB  for / & /home if worth the effort.

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

Yes, that sounds fine - provided your back-up of /home is no bigger than 17GB.
Because it is a clean install, if you don't like the result, just do another clean install.  Cheesy

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

That should be fine, 100Gb was just an easy number to split up  Wink
Just checked mine and my / is 28Gb but only 8.9Gb is used and that is a working system live for 5 months no 12Gb should be fine,
So when you run the installer choose CUSTOM PARTITIONING, then wipe the partition table and use the above (wipe by choosing new partition table in gparted or just delete the partitions one at a time )

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

Thanks guys!  I meant what I said...one step at a time (when I have it!). My /home presently is about 1GB but space to expand will be useful. If HB gets away with >10GB, as recommended, fine as well.

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

Hi lads!
No I have not done much for this, the month has sped by and some hols, agriculture and some to and froing with DSL connections have taken up most of my available time.
Returning to the clean install of 10.04.2 that I should be up to, one small ? question ?. When I have got to the sizing of partitions and have got the right sizes how do I ensure that when / fills up with the biggest part of the OS, the /home does go to the empty sda3? I seem to remember reading that there would be some hoops to jump through to get the mount point in the right place to stop / putting  its own /home in /? Does labelling sda3 as /home do it all for me? You will remember (with shudders) that this was a basic problem in the first place many posts ago.

Installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Follow the part with the heading "Here's how you do a manual partitioning with /home:"
with these screenshots

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

When you do a CUSTOM PARTITION install and CHOOSE the PARTITIONS it puts them where YOU specify.
So if you want to you can have
sda1 as /home
sda2 as /
sda3 as swap
or more usually
sda1 / (10+ Gb)
sda2 /swap (whatever)
sda3 /home (rest of disk)
So you don't end up with the situation of 2 (or more) partitions/folders called home.

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

Thanks lads,
I thought that it would be automatic using the labelling of the partitions, it was a possible pothole remembering my original problem and did not want to fall into it again!
Download speeds of around half my upload speeds are my main consideration rioght now!!

Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Tools/Downloads

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry! Too busy to find enough time to concentrate on this right now. All the valuable advice safely stored. Hope to have more on the subject before long. Man organised by PN coming on Monday pm to look at my set-up, if he is successful, may do a bit more partition-bashing then.
Thanks to all.
