File conversion

Could someone please tell me how to convert a gif to a jpeg?  I have Infanview on my PC but don't seem to get it to work.  Is there a simple way to convert?

Re: File conversion

I don't use that program but the usual way is "Save As" then change the file type

Windows Paint will do it

Re: File conversion

I use Irfanview and Oldjim is correct. File/Save As.... then select the file extension from the Save As Type drop down list at the bottom of the dialogue box.

Re: File conversion

Thanks for the quick replies.  Done it in Paint, thanks Mal.
One small point, the gif was animated but the jpeg isn't.  Any reason for this?

Re: File conversion

Poppy, I've sorted my immediate problem but can I ask you something about Irfanview please?  I opened the prog and clicked file > open and selected my gif.  The image then appeared in the body of the screen but when I go back to file all the save options are grayed.  What am I doing wrong?

Re: File conversion

Thinking about it - one of the newer file formats allows animation - doesn't it ?

Re: File conversion

single frame gif's irfan view lets you change its type, but multiframe the save as is greyed out

Re: File conversion

Artmo - you are not doing anything wrong. I normally don't use gif images but I tried one just now and mine is greyed out too so Paint seems the best option.
BTW Irfanview is now on version 4.25 - I updated mine at the weekend as Kaspersky was showing it up as vulnerable.

Thanks for checking it out for me Poppy.  Thanks also for the info on the latest version which I have just updated.

Re: File conversion

As Mal0z hinted at, animated GIFs are made from a series of separate frames which are played in sequence. The Save as options are probably greyed out in Irfanview because it knows it can't save an animated GIF in a still format. Paint is not clever enough to know the difference, so just saves the first frame.
There are some animated versions of the PNG format around, but they are not widely supported.

Re: File conversion

From memory, Photoshop does the same, just converts the top image
