Above.
I have an AVI file which I recorded at Comic Con yesterday, it comes in at 2.7 Gig, I'm sure I've read that if I can change it to an MP4 or something the file size would reduce considerably.
How would I do this given the lack of video editing apps on Chrome?
Please do not insult me for owning a Chromebox, I am aware they are not "cool".

Fixed! Go to the fix.

Might help free-video-editing-software-for-chromebook but not having used one, might not (I have looked at them in the pass but decided I preferred a full blown laptops. If the above doesn't do, well, easiest method would be to put the file on to a USB stick, find a friend who has file conversion software and do it from there. Job done.
btw bit late now but wouldn't it have made sense to record in MP4 in the first place - just a thought

However, I just found http://www.cloudconvert.com on Google and am in the process of converting a 2.7 Gig AVI to an MP4, might shrink the file size to about half or less hopefully.

AVI & MP4 are just containers.
You can remux the contents to any size - at the cost of quality.
Try Handbrake to do this - Linux, Windows, Mac - a fast multicore processor will be needed.
It will take a long time.

Well using cloudconvert.com, I converted the file to an MP4 and it's shrunk from 2.7 Gig to 464 Mb so a bit less than a fifth of the size.

8 Euros, as it was a German site, but I don't think that converts to being expensive.

It probably isn't, although you could have done it yourself for free...

@VileReynard This is part of the reason I hate Chrome OS, you can't do anything except browse and download Chrome specific apps.
However I'm stuck with it because my Internet security expert Brother thinks Windows is a liability due to the hacking risks, especially when 75% of the Internet hates me for reasons I can't help, such as not being able to work full time or even at all.
Also, I just tested the MP4 file playback and despite the considerably smaller file size it's still decent quality.

It's moot now I know but you could have got it done for nothing if you know anyone with a Linux box:
ffmpeg -i comic_con.avi -c:v copy -c:a copy -y comic_con.mp4
