Fibre to the Home/Cabinet on it's way?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/15/bt_fibre_spending/
BT may be sticking their hand in their pocket to roll out FTTH/FTTC?
Whatever next!

This on the BBC web site too.
As BT want a "return on their investment", I assume that they're not wanting to open it up to other providers and you'll need to go to BT to get the faster speeds.  From the BBC article:

However, the communications group has made clear it will only make the move if regulator Ofcom allows it to get a decent return on that investment.

Just noticed this on TBB:

A key point made by BT is that these fibre based products will be available at a wholesale level, which will increase the pressure on Virgin Media to provide a similar service.

So it looks as though it'll be open to all providers!

Re: Fibre to the Home/Cabinet on it's way?

We all know BT will try to squeeze as much profit as possible out of these new connections...
So.. how long until the heavy users start suffering connection problems?

Re: Fibre to the Home/Cabinet on it's way?

It had to happen Virgin Media are now claiming to be "the mother of broadband" with their fibre service. even with ADSL2+ the BTW  offering is hardly 21st century is it?
Not applicable

Re: Fibre to the Home/Cabinet on it's way?

Yeah, Virgin fail to mention the coax part of their network on the adverts though don't they!
Any network is only as good as its weakest link - BTs weak link is the copper from the exchange to our homes via the 'green boxes'. If they can remove a large part of that weakness and leave folks with lines only a few hundred metres long, the result will have to be good.
Capacity will still be a potential problem, but even if we assumed we'd all get the same speed we do now, latency would still be reduced giving a superior service. Increasing speed and decreasing latency would be a a real boon.
One aspect not mentioned yet though is the LLU aspect; if BT were to start putting their equipment into the cabinets to enable the use of fibre, would they have to allow other operators to do likewise?

BT and fibre optics

Just wondering what people think of this announcement from BT that they’re going to invest £1.5bn in fibre optic cables to allow ‘super fast’ broadband?  Would MN/PN customers benefit from the tie-up between PN and BT?

Unlikely as PN allegedly operates autonomously.

Re: BT and fibre optics

I would have thought that anything BT put in would be available, at an appropriate price, to other operators.  Wink

Re: Fibre to the Home/Cabinet on it's way?

I would kill to get fibre to my doorstep but I live in the middle of nowhere and can only get about 2Mb on my MAX Dsl. Think I would be waiting for a while for fibre!
