I've been using several WD elements portable drives for rotating backups for umpteen years without any problems.
That said I do
1. Treat them as delicate fragile items - they are not slammed down on desks, dropped etc
2. Always use the windows disconnect HDD icon first to shut down the drive and never just yank out the USB connection.
