Hi
I recently added a 500gig external Lacie drive quite a cheepo and is quite slow, however when i re-boot
windows xp it hangs and wont start, the only way i can get it to start is by switching off the external hard drive and then it will boot up ok. Is this normal, should you switch off any external drives before re-booting or have i got some kind of conflict going on..may seem a daft question but i am learning all the time...Thanks

the order in your Bios is probably USB, CD, Then hard disc, its up to you if you change that, but it could in future times stop you doing an emmergency boot, you could leave CD and move USB

I've also seen quite a few systems recently that just hang or take ages to get past the BIOS stage due to a USB device. Unplug the device and the PC boots fine, reconnect once booted and it's all OK.
First one I saw the owner was convinced it was a faulty power supply problem.
No idea WHY this happens though, and it may not be your problem either.

See if there is a BIOS update for your Mobo which may fix this problem.

Is XP hanging, or are you getting an error (eg "Cannot find ntdetect.com")
If its the latter, there are a couple of easy fixes depending on your preference.
