Exchange Server linux alternative

Simple reason being I am trying to save some money (and headaches with AD and 2k3!!!)
Anybody any ideas of alternates? Cheap - Free if possible!

Re: Exchange Server linux alternative

A quick google shows loads of mail servers for Linux. What you need to specify is what you want it to do ie how many users, will it need to connect to windows AD, do you want webmail etc.
If you give the full specs then some of the Linux boys can suggest something.  What spec of PC will it be running on and have you expertize in Linux to configure the server

Re: Exchange Server linux alternative

That does not say what the current email users actually use within outlook; calendar, local contacts list, global contacts, shared folders, TODO, multiple folders, some users being able to access and/or send on behalf of someone else.
Do you have mail delivered direct to your server via SMTP or do you have a POP3 connector process to pick up POP3 mail or both?
You need to ensure whatever replaces exchange can be backed up and more importantly can easily be restored on an overall basis or individual mailboxes.
Do you need webmail?
Do you need to import existing mail and contacts (address book) to the new system?
Do you have a lot of Unix experience as maintaining a mail system may well take longer than an inequivalent MS product.

Do you need webmail? - no, but would be useful

Do you have a lot of Unix experience as maintaining a mail system may well take longer than an inequivalent MS product. - a reasonable amount, not with postfix or exim etc, more with other net services on the system.. i had looked, and would happily use MS exchange, if only i didnt need to use damn AD to make it work!
