For some time now, when I open an Excel file, it claims there is already a file open with the same name. It then says I can solve the problem if I rename this file, but I've tried that, and the newly named file has the same problem.
The whole thing is no more than a nuisance, because if I close the warning window, I can continue with any editing I want to do, and it will save quite happily, but next time I open the file, it does it again.
This doesn't appear to be specific to any one excel file, but has been happening ever since I managed to delete everything on my pc (I was using Partition Magic to adjust the size of a partition, and it formatted the C: drive - I then ran GetDataBack and recovered 99% of everything).
Anyway, as I say, it is no more than a nuisance, but does anyone out there know how I can get this little pest to go away?
My thanks in advance.

Try closing Excel and clicking start/run and typing
excel /regserver
I haven't tried this myself but apparently it resets the registry to re-associate Excel with its files.
NB: notice space after excel and before /
