Excel 2K how to copy cells from a saved workbook into to another being created?

I have a saved workbook and want to use certain cells from it to use in another I an creating, Selecting copy in one and Paste or Paste Special in the being created one does not work, as the Paste options are greyed.
Is there a way to do what I want simply? BTW VBA is something of which I am extremely ignorant and so I would prefer to avoid.

try opening a new sheet, make a dummy entry then paste

you need to use the Paste Link command - with both workbooks open.
If you then close the workbook where the link came from the link changes to show the complete path
