For some reason when I put a movie into my Dvd drive, nothing happens.
I goto my E: drive and double click it and it just says "please insert a disc" (when it's allready inserted)
I tried with a few Dvds and none work.
The drive works when I use it for installing windows though...
It is a Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-7201S, and I tried installing the latest driver for it but that didn't help.
I also went to device manager, uninstalled the drive, then rebooted. but that didn't help (google tip)
I downloaded some microsoft windows diagnostic thing "fix it", but it failed to install >_>
I don't really know what to do... I have windows 7 (64 bit) and the mobo is Evga 790i sli ftw
(not sure if that is relevant) (also the mobo has latest bios/driver too)
brrr annoying, I want to watch dvds ^^
Anyone know how to fix it? X_x

Assuming you're putting DVD's in the right way up if the system literally believes there is nothing at all in the drive then the drive is faulty.
(does the light on the front flicker while it tries to recognise the format?)
Buy a new one, they're cheap as chips.
Personally I tend to go for LG models, but it's not that important.

The ones I fail on, I don't know, they are just DVDs from the store. It doesn't say dual layer anywhere.
labels:
dvd-video, dolby digital, AD, FACT, PAL (2)
(my computer is set to the correct region too)
Hmm, windows install disc is on a disc I copied, DVD-R single sided (4.7 Gb)
I just tried it in the drive and it couldn't read the windows disc either... But it read it from boot up (i think), at least it did the last time i reformatted...
The green light stays on for a bout a minute before going off. The drive also makes a few little beeps during this time...
I have another partition on this computer, so I will try it on the other one to see if it works there.

Before you condemn it try a lens cleaner on it. I had this issue with a mates PC, a quick trip to poundland and a play of the disk and all was well again. Epically if it has been in a smoking environment.
