Is it true that you need IE to allow Windows updates?

I don't beleive so although actually removing IE is almost impossible due to the way Microsoft tied it into the operating system so all you do is make the browser you want the default browser

No, unless you are on an old version of Windows such as XP, for which there are no more updates anyway....

I dont have any IE on my system  
totally remove IT  every time i install windows ,  go,,,, uninstall programs / turn windows features off /  un tick IE .
hay presto ! no more IE on my PC

Not sure if I like the look so far.
Hoping the memory leak has been addressed, though. But, as artmo says, it's early days.
